Here's a question for you:
I routinely reward my team out of my own pocket.
Some folks hold that taking them to lunch and paying for it myself is stupid.
My position is that it isn't their fault that our employer is stingy, and if I have the capital wherewithal to spring for lunch here and there, and they've earned it, I should reward them.
After all, Tyona used to do it for me when I worked for Suin'Sam; I always felt like I learned a good lesson (sometimes good things still happen for no apparent reason; followed by work doesn't always have to suck and; not all bosses are bad).
Thoughts? Am I an idiot for forking out my own cash? Or am I doing the right thing by making sure my people are happy and taken care of when my company wants to stiff them?

It's the motive that's important. If you take them to lunch as a PERSONAL thank you for helping YOU out then it's o.k.(I think.) But it sounds as if you are substituting yourself for the company you all work for which , I believe, is absolutely incorrect and even unethical.I mean what's next? Giving them bonuses and benefits out of your own pocket? Clearly you would not , but you see the slipery slope, the blurring of demarkation lines. Better to keep them absolutely clear.
Your late dead great aunt SerryLyn was very careful that
when her company was being bought she made sure that her people were protected and even rewarded for their work. It wasn't in her job discription but she did it anyway. sometimes a slop if just an illusion, and a hat is just a hat.
